I spent the long weekend sinking into Thomas Moore’s book Care of the Soul.
What a brilliant piece of literature. As a spiritual director, it is a great book to have as a guidepost to where my real work with directee’s resides. Thomas Moore writes clearly about the difference between personal struggles and the mythic movement of soul underneath the struggle (or within it).
He shares his insights into human emotions like love, jealousy, envy, power struggles and more.
So far, I have devoured more than half of the book and underlined some piece of wisdom on nearly every page.
If you want to understand what spiritual direction is, then read this book.
“Somehow we have to understand that we cannot solve our ’emotional’ problems until we grasp this mystery that honoring the divine and the departed is part of the basic care that as human beings we have to bring to life.” (p. xvii- introduction)
“Often when imagination twists the commonplace into a slightly new form, suddenly we see soul where formerly it was hidden” (p. xix- introduction)
“The life of the soul, as the structure of dreams reveals, is a continual going over and over of the material of life.” (p. 13)
“Remember, soul appears most easily in those places where we feel most inferior.” (p.51)
Ok, I’ll stop quoting for now. But I could go on and on, y’all. It is truly one of my new favorite resources for the dream work (soul work) that I am so dedicated to
So, what has your soul been working on lately? let’s talk about your dreams and we’ll discover what life material is needing your attention.
