I just spent a weekend living among a community of spiritual directors. We gathered in the Union Station Hotel in St. Louis. Throughout the weekend I was fed spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically. I filled up 32 pages in my journal. I dreamed, slept, meditated, told stories, heard stories, prayed, laughed, cried, broke bread, drank wine, and danced. And, I was awakened.
I did not expect to be challenged at such a deep level and to be so whole-heartedly supported. It’s not that I didn’t know that was available to me, it’s that I wasn’t ready to be shaken awake. I didn’t realize I was snoozing.
I am so grateful for the skilled organization of the people of Spiritual Directors International. I was surprised by their willingness to step up to the plate of deep and difficult conversations. But they did step up, the keynote speakers and the workshop leaders all stepped up in an effort to wake me up and to tell their truths.
My experience has inspired me to purify my voice and my stories in deep stillness and then to shout them from the rooftops as a rally cry to others who are waiting to hear from me.
In her keynote speech, Mirabai Starr listed these as some of the values of (spiritual) feminine leadership:
Fierce truth-telling | subversive | disruptive | creative | erotic (affirming beauty and wisdom of the body) | relational | mutually empowering | values kindness over power | willingness to have our hearts broken and broken open
Which of these qualities resonate in you? Which of these descriptive values awakens something in you, calls something out of you, or deepens your desire to live more fully?
Fierce truth-telling became the mantra for my weekend and is still echoing in my heart as I type. I wish I had a few solid weeks of an empty schedule to give voice right here and right now to all of the stories that are rising within me. I wish I could just pour them all out on this one page. But, life doesn’t work like that. I will have to settle for this and trust that it is enough for today.
Take care today, listen deeply and give voice to what is yours to tell.
